Kefalonia is situated off the west-coast of mainland Greece and can be reached by sea and by air.
By Air
There is an international airport on the island, which has daily flights from Athens and other major airports throughout Europe (charter flights). The new updated site of the airport is www.efl-airport.gr where you can find useful information about airlines, arrivals and departures etc.
If there is no direct flight from your country, or you want to explore a few more locations in Greece before you come to Kefalonia, you could fly to or from Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport of Athens and drive to Kefalonia (total time approx 7 hours including the ferry), or use the bus service (KTEL) mentioned below.
Zante (Zakynthos) International Airport could be used to spend a few days on the neighbouring Island and then the ferry can be taken to Kefalonia.
Another airport that could be used to reach Kefalonia is Araxos Airport located on the western Peloponnese between Patras and Kyllini ports (serving many destinations and then take the ferry to Kefalonia). This would be a great idea if you wanted to visit Ancient Olympia.
Another option is the International Airport of Kalamata where you could spend a few days exploring the Peloponnese and then take a ferry to Kefalonia.
By Ferry
There are various ports in Italy (Bari, Ancona, Brindisi) that have connections to mainland Greece and Kefalonia directly, to Sami port (starting usually on May). In Greece ferries to Kefalonia depart from Patras and Kyllini, both ports are located in the western Peloponnese and arrive respectively in the ports of Sami and Poros.
If you want to reach Kefalonia from the north of Greece, local ferries also depart from the port of Astakos on mainland Greece, to Sami, Kefalonia and to Ithaca. During summer season (starting from May), the port of Fiscardo in northern Kefalonia receives ferries from Vassiliki or Nidri at Lefkas (Lefkada), while the port of Pessada in southern Kefalonia operates ferries to Agios Nikolaos on Zante ( Zakynthos).
Other
To explore every inch of the island at your convenience I would recommend hiring a car or a motorbike/scooter. However, the local bus transportation provided by KTEL is a cheap and good alternative to hiring a car or bike as routes cover most of the island. Alternatively you can arrange an organised tour, a local taxi tour, or explore the island by boat or bicycle.
