August in Kefalonia is a vibrant and popular time, but with a few smart choices, you can still enjoy its natural beauty, culture, and charm while avoiding the heat, crowds, and tourist hotspots.
1. Dodge Cruise Ship Rush Days
August brings significant cruise ship arrivals in Argostoli—typical days include the 1st, 4th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 11th, 14th, 15th, 17th, 18th, 21st, 22nd, 25th, 27th, and 30th—with passenger numbers ranging from roughly 2,000 to over 4,000 Cruise Timetables.
On these days, avoid visiting the main attractions and beaches like Melissani, Drogarati, Myrtos and Argostoli, the capital, Makris Gialos and consider heading to quieter corners of the island early or exploring inland escapes.

- Visit Melissani and Drogarati Cave at opening times around 9 a.m. to enjoy their otherworldly beauty before the big numbers of visitors arrive.
- Alternatively Skip Melissani and Drogarati Caves and instead opt for a guided caving adventure into Aggalaki, St. Theodoros or other Caves with Outdoor Kefalonia—expertly guided, with equipment and routes for all levels.
- Visit Zervati Cave: A largely undiscovered gem with two serene brackish lakes, rich aquatic flora, and almost no visitors—access is free and unguided and the temperatures very cool.
3. Boat to Secluded Beaches
