Every year on the eve of September 14th, the faithful gather at Kipouria Monastery, one of Kefalonia’s most breathtaking and spiritually significant sites, to celebrate the Exaltation of the Holy Cross (Ύψωση του Τιμίου Σταυρού).
The monastery, perched dramatically on a cliff above the Ionian Sea near Lixouri, is dedicated to the Holy Cross and holds one of the island’s most important religious feasts on this date. Pilgrims and visitors come from across Kefalonia and beyond to honor the occasion, attend the liturgy, and join in the celebrations.

The Feast Day
The Exaltation of the Holy Cross is a solemn day in the Orthodox calendar, commemorating the finding of the True Cross by Saint Helena and its elevation by the Patriarch of Jerusalem in 335 AD. The celebration at Kipouria Monastery includes:
- Festive Divine Liturgy in the monastery’s church
- Veneration of the Holy Cross relics and icons
- Traditional gathering in the monastery courtyard, where locals and visitors share fellowship and refreshments
A Spiritual and Scenic Experience
Kipouria Monastery is famous not only for its religious significance but also for its unique location. Built in the 17th century, it is known as the “balcony of the Ionian” thanks to its stunning views over the sea. Sunset here is particularly magical, and many visitors time their trip to witness this unforgettable sight.

Basil and bread play a central role in tradition and worship.
- Basil is linked to the discovery of the Cross, its fragrance considered protective and sacred. After the church service, it is distributed to the faithful and often planted in gardens or pots as a blessing for fertility and the new harvest.
- Bread is prepared and offered alongside basil as a symbol of blessing and abundance. It is brought to the church to be blessed, together with other seeds and grains, before planting for the new agricultural year.
- The day is marked by a strict fast, excluding even oil, underlining the solemnity of the Cross.
- Historically, the feast commemorates the discovery of the True Cross by Saint Helen in 326 AD and its later restoration to Jerusalem after being seized by the Persians.
In essence, basil and bread on this feast symbolise protection, fertility, and divine blessing, linking the Cross with the earth’s fruitfulness and the hopes of the faithful for the year ahead.
