Travel guide to Pylaros (North-Central)

Pylaros Valley

The region of Pylaros is located in the north-central part of the island. The landscape is dominated by a valley formed between two mountains, Agia Dynati and Kalon Oros that provide a corridor between the amazing coastlines on the East and West. The mountains are both rocky and green and are dotted with herds of sheep and goats, old buildings and small settlements. A main road that runs along the valley floor links the two coasts (there are also smaller roads you can take on the mountainside) and a signed walking path crisscrosses the valley from Agia Efimia to Myrtos with branches leading off to other villages along the way offering terrific walks and hikes. The valley has many olive trees providing a rich source of oil and olives, a plentiful source of animals and a rural, traditional feel.

Traditionally goat and sheep farming and fishing were the main income of the area, and whilst there are still many herds, and some fishing, in recent years tourism has become the prime income. Whilst the region remains traditional and largely underdeveloped it has many attractions and activities for visitors. The largest settlement in Pylaros is Agia Efimia, located at sea level on the eastern coast. If you are staying in Agia Efimia you will find major services and facilities such as a post office, pharmacy, cash machine, souvenier shops, travel agencies, a hairdresser, scooter and car hire, a chandlers, a variety of supermarkets, snack bars and tavernas/restaurants. Other notable villages in this region include Makriotika, Divarata, Antipata, Logarata,

Markata, Vasilopoulata, Potamianata, Anomeria, Krini,  Xeropotamos, Drakopoulata, Feredinata, Dendrinata, and Siniori (Divarata). Hiring a car is a great option to explore the other areas, or to drive into Agia Efimia for supplies, but there are tavernas and mini-markets dotted around the other villages. Divarata has a few places to eat, a couple of mini-markets and some souvenir and tourist shops. The region is an excellent choice for families and for couples looking for a quiet holiday because apart from the café culture and eating out there is little in the way of nightlife, but there are many attractions and activities to keep you occupied. Most of the beaches in this area are predominantly pebble, making for excellent snorkeling and clear waters.

Boulavard Boats, Agia Efimia

There are many walking trails in this area, including Agia Efimia to Themata Monastery, Traces of Old Agia Efimia, and walking paths to Myrtos, to Drakopoulata, to Divarata and in and around the valley.

Organised boat tours leave from the harbour at Agia Efimia for various day trips such as the vessel Romantika, or you can rent a small hire boat from one of the companies in the harbour like Boulevard Boats to explore the seas yourself! A water taxi service also leaves from the harbor. If you prefer to see what's below the surface you can go diving with Makis at the Aquatic Scuba Diving Club. Rent a scooter or a car from the village or hire a bicycle from Boulevard Boats to fully explore the region or further afield.

During the first weeks of July the village hosts a street market, church services and entertainment to celebrate the Saints name day on the 11th July, it’s a fabulous way to connect with the locals and experience some local and traditional culture, it’s free and everyone is welcome to participate. Various concerts and events take place throughout the tourist season, starting with a small flower market and wreath making on Protomagia (May Day) to celebrate Greek Labour Day.

There are many waterfront tavernas, restaurants and cafes in Agia Efimia, some with live music, take a walk and look out for notice boards with special events.
You can take a fun and informative cooking lesson with a local!

Lithovatis beach

One of the most stunning beaches in Greece, if not the world, can be found here and any visitor to Kefalonia should not leave without seeing the beautiful and breathtaking Myrtos Beach. It's ultra blue waters are amazing, and although it gets very busy in the high season, it is a large beach with space for everybody.

Other small beaches in the area can be found in Agia Efimia and along the coastline between Pylaros and Sami including Lithovatis, (Agia Efimia),  Agia Efimia Beach, and Agia Paraskevi. Agia Efimia, traditionally a fishing village, retains its charm with a bustling harbour and a welcoming local population. Whilst In Agia Efimia visit the Roman Villa, located behind the main square of the village.

Makriotika, at the heart of Pylaros, is the only village that has maintained a lot of the color and character of the pre earthquake times it's worth a walk around, there is a coffee shop and a couple of tavernas, and visit the Olive Story Museum (check for opening times).

Dotted around the area you will find remains of traditional windmills, and some pre-earthquake houses: Drakapoulata has some amazing ruins which give the visitor a feel of what it was like to live in an old traditional village. Themata Monastery lies about half way up Agia Dynati Mountain and is worth the trip for the views alone.
