The Itinerary

1st day, you can familiarise yourselves with your area by visiting some of the best sights on the island. After a generous breakfast with local products and a morning swim at the villa (if you have a pool), you can head off to the underground magic world of Drogarati Cave. At the end of the tour you can either stop for horse riding (you can ask for the ride at the beach!) or donkey trekking or drive direct to Antisamos beach, where you can relax on the free sunbeds and enjoy a snack, get a massage or a drink by the sea.  If you want to be more private you can walk a little bit further in the beach (bear in mind that stones are bigger on that side so you may need special shoes if you are not used to it). At the center of the beach, there is a variety of watersport activities to choose from or just go for a mini cruise to one of the nearby beaches. Check for the Ancient Sami trail, if you like walking, as it offers great views over Sami port. You can also see the ruins of Ancient Sami. You can finish your day with a great dinner at Sami or Agia Efimia restaurants followed by a drink at one of the bars in Sami or Agia Efimia. Visiting one of the little coves just off the roadside between Agia Efimia and Sami at night for a night swim or just to enjoy the stars, can be a unique experience.

…..

2nd day,  I suggest you spend this day around the area of the capital city Argostoli, take the road sign posted from Sami.  Once you arrive at Argostoli (select sights and shopping ideas from my special tour of Argostoli), visit Katavothres (one of the strange phenomena of the island), swim at Platis-Makris Gialos  (offering a selection of watersports and beach bars). If you like cooking this is your chance to explore Kefalonian cuisine and local products and dishes in an organised Cooking Lesson ! Here as well you can arrange to take one of the tours of sea kayaking or canoeing. Dine at one of the restaurants in Argostoli.  If you want to have a private dinner by your pool, let us organise a special menu from our chef at your accommodation.

…..

3d day After a nice breakfast at home or at one of Agia Efimia’s cafes, you can pay a visit to the Olive Museum at the village of Makriotika (ask for the opening times before you go) or/and visit Themata Monastery just on the mountain above, offering great views of Pylaros valley and Agia Efimia. You can head off then to my favorite destination, Assos village and castle. There depending on the heat and time of your arrival you can swim, or walk around to enjoy the traditional architecture (Assos is together with Fiscardo the only two villages that have not been destroyed by the earthquake of 1953). Following that you can order a snack or lunch at one of the sea side cafes and tavernas and when it gets cooler you can climb up to the venetian Assos castle and explore it (this is one of my favourite walks!). It is a unique experience and you can get amazing views of both the village as well as a breathtaking sunset (in order to watch the sunset you need to walk to the west side of the peninsula, that would take you approx 1.15h to get there and a little less to come back). Assos is great for a night drink in one of the sea side cafe bars, romantic and peaceful!

.…..

4th day If you wake up early you can visit Karavomilos Lake, (a beautiful peaceful spot with a circular lake and ducks just a few meters from the beach). From there you can take the seaside walking path to the village of Sami (just 1km) to get your breakfast and then come back or the other way round. You can stop on your way back to have a swim (if you want umbrellas and sunbeds you have to stop outside the camping). Karavomilos camping offers one adult and two children pools, a cafe-snack bar overlooking the sea, changing rooms and shower to be used (if you just order something from the bar). Υou can rent a boat for the day, from Agia Efimia, I suggest you stop in the isolated beaches (not reachable from the road) on the way to the north and enjoy your privacy. You can end up at Agia Sofia (there is a basic canteen here) and Horgota beaches (both reachable by car as well). Returning to Agia Efimia little port you can enjoy a mediterranean meal at Sea Rock ws or Dendrinos restaurant, overlooking the sea (both have the honor to offer you amazing moon rises – don’t miss full moon here) . Then you can get a drink at Carena and watch the world go by.

……

5th day Have a leisurely breakfast at Sami and around 12 o clock (the best time to visit) you can drive to the magical Melissani Lake for a boat tour. If you  are feeling adventurous you arrange for a unique caving experience with the experts in order to visit various caves in the area. I suggest you spend the rest of your day relaxing on the famous Myrtos beach (if it is not a windy day – as Myrtos can be dangerous for swimming if not calm). On your way there you can stop at Agia Efimia to book a diving lesson from an expert instructor or/and  just get your adrenaline high by flying over the sea, by paragliding at Myrtos beach. A unique experience offering breathtaking views! Myrtos offers a canteen and part of it is organised with umbrellas and loungers. You can stay there until the sunset, when most of the visitors will have left and enjoy the calmest time of day and a unique sunset!

..…..

6th day Visit Fiscardo, the cosmopolitan, picturesque village with a wide selection of restaurants and services, (fish spa, diving, massage or reiki and shopping). If you like walking, there are many signed foot paths to choose from, but an easy and good choice is to walk to the Venetian Lighthouse and Byzantine Basilica that you see on the opposite side of the bay. There are many beautiful beaches nearby to choose from like Foki beach, Dafnoudi beach (if you want to walk for approx 1km in a dreamy shaded path), Kimilia beach (again 700m of walking to reach the beach). You can end up for a dinner or a cocktail at one of the cafe-bars at Fiscardo to take in the cosmopolitan atmosphere.

……

7th day Rent a crewed motor yacht or choose one of the day cruises to Ithaca or sail around the island. Sailing is a great alternative to discover Kefalonia and the neighboring islands avoiding driving. You will have the chance to explore amazing landscape, beaches and villages without ever worrying about the crowds. If you want the exhilaration of being on the water with the wind in your hair, freedom to explore, privacy, service, pampering, great food and well-mixed drinks, then I highly recommend a crewed luxury motor yacht. You can visit the neighbouring islands like Zante, Ithaca and Lefkas or just sail around Kefalonia. The Ionian sea has many beautiful places to visit such as Vathi and Frikes on the legendary island of Ithaca, the birthplace of Odysseus. Sami, Agia Efimia, and Fiscardo on Kefalonia. Meganisi with the ports of Little Vathi and Spartochori, and also Nidri, Sivota and Lefkas town on the island of Lefkas. You can also sail around the island of Scorpios, previously owned by the Onassis family and now owned by a Russian tycoon, or just moor in different secluded bays and dine aboard under the stars. A lower cost alternative would be to choose one of the daily cruises.

……

8th day Drive direct to Skala village and beach, visit the Roman villa and old Skala and try a variety of watersports, like jet skiing or get a speed boat at Dolphin Ski Club, or try Captain Vangeli’s Special Tour. Skala beach is long and parts are organised but if you need more privacy, drive a bit further on. Once you have had enough of sunbathing, you can get lunch at one of Skalas restaurants. On your way back you can either stop for a visit the fishing port of Katelios or you can visit Atros Monastery, the oldest in Kefalonia and a rare element of monastic architecture sitting at 800m above the port of Poros offering amazing views. If you travel before the middle of June and you enjoy hiking (depending on the rainfall of the previous months), you can arrange for a guided tour at the Gradou or Potisti waterfalls located between Skala and Poros villages.

…..

9th day Drive to Saint George Castle, once the capital of Kefalonia, dating back to Byzantine and then Venetian times (ask for the opening times before you go), have a walk at the castle and the surrounding neighborhood that has traditional houses and amazing views, it is worth visiting the ruins of the medieval church of Evangelistria, which dates from 1420 and the church of Agios Theodoros which is even older. When you get tired have a drink at Kastro Cafe or lunch at Il Borgo restaurant.   This is a good opportunity if you want to see some more at Argostoli, do some shopping for home and explore what you didn’t have the time to see on the 2nd day. This is the perfect day for you to have a walk at Koutavos sea-lake in Argostoli, cross De Bosset bridge and relax in a peaceful environment. You can also visit the Botanical Garden or the Environmental Center of Mount Ainos to familiarize yourselves with local environmental issues and local flora.

…..

10th day Today you can explore Paliki peninsula, at the west of the island, visiting Xi beach with great red sand and impressive grey clay rocky background (the beach has a selection of beach bars, some with watersports service). Here you can have a natural spa, as the grey clay, according to the ancient and modern scientists, has medicinal properties that can cure skin disorders andheal wounds. It is used for detoxification and many other disorders and injuries. Driving around the peninsula you can stop for a swim and lunch at Vatsa or head off to the north to Petanoi beach (and with your bathing suit get a simple lunch at Erasmias beach taverna and cool down with a cold beer enjoying one of the best sunset spots in the island!). If you feel adventurous and need more exploration stop at Kipouria Monastery for amazing sunset and get a glimpse of Platia Ammos (my favourite beach) from above as it is accessible only by boat!

…..

11th day If you want to visit the religious center of Kefalonia, drive to the Monastery of Saint Gerassimos. You can then visit one of the wineries nearby for tasting and purchase. One of the best destinations of the island – not visited by a lot of tourists – is Mount Ainos, the highest (1628m) mountain of the Ionian islands, declared National Park with unique flora and fauna (if you are lucky you can see the wild horses!) and panoramic breathtaking views to the Peloponnese, Zante, Lefkas. There are numerous trails you can follow. There is a more adventurous option to explore it by jeep safari if you prefer. It is a unique experience worth experiencing!

…..

12th day This is a relaxing day away from all crowds and touristic attractions. Prepare a little snack at home and head off to Agia Kiriaki. On your way there you will stop above Myrtos beach with Assos peninsula on the background to admire and take photos of one of the most beautiful sights you will ever see (the picture is never the same!). The route on this side of the island gives you the chance to admire the gulf of Agia Kyriaki and the beautiful rock formations creating 2 of the best beaches on the island, Vouti and unique Fteri beach (not reachable by car). Once you arrive at Agia Kiriaki you can reserve your fresh fish in the local taverna and drive to Vouti beach a few km further. When you arrive at the little kiosk offering refreshments have a look at both sides of the beach to choose the one you like the most (if you like snorkelling this would be a good chance to enjoy it). The sun here leaves early, around 5, so have that in mind. On your way back you will have fresh fish, chips and salad and either check for any celebrations or local events or return to Agia Efimia for an afternoon drink or sweet or if you don’t mind driving a bit further you can go for a walk coffee, drink or dinner at the village of Lixouri.

…..

13th day Explore the south beaches of the island, Ammes, Ai Helis, Spartia, Saint Thomas, Trapezaki, Lourdas, Koroni. On your way there you can book a tour at Domata village, at Dias Organic Apiary, to get into the bee world, at the same village you can visit the church of presentation of Virgin Mary. Have lunch at Lithero taverna above Lourdas beach a traditional taverna overlooking the sea or for a unique sunset and lunch stop at Sesto bar, Koroni Hill, with very special atmosphere.

…..

14th day If you just want to have a relaxing day, before you leave and do some shopping (not the cheapest place!) you can revisit Fiscardo and the surrounding locations, to explore what you missed. If you want to see some more beaches of the north you can rent a boat from here. A nice choice (but a bit crowded in mid August) would be the small but picturesque Alaties beach, you can end up here early afternoon for a quick swim and a meal or drink at Acqua Alaties bar-restaurant with unique sunset views.

Depending of your travel dates, it would be great to participate to one of the religious or local celebrations or festivals organised in different locations every summer (check our list and check closer to the dates for upcoming events)

Note: Generally beaches from the heart to the north of the island are pebbly and the ones in Paliki Peninsula (west) and south are sandy but if you want to know from before, check the beaches menu.

The following services can be included on your plan, just contact us: food shopping, buttler, masseuse, daily maid, nanny, personal trainer, wine tasting, delivery of organic products and of course any activity from our site menu!
